A highlight in the life of a hospitalized child
Bingo is a highlight in the life of a hospitalized child. Whether children can join others in the activity area or participate through closed-circuit television in their rooms, they engage in a patient community playing Bingo. It is an opportunity to feel normal and be distracted from pain and upcoming procedures. Because the games and prizes in children’s hospitals are usually geared toward younger children, teenage patients often did not participate.
Pierre saw Bingo Parties as an ideal venue for both children and adolescents and personally raised money to expand the prize offerings in prizes that appealed to the adolescents, like lava lamps and gift cards. Teens started showing up and having fun.
Today, Pierre's Birthday Fund provides funding for a Bingo program that is fun for participants of all ages at both UCSF Oakland and Mission Bay hospitals.
